CRAFT WEST: Wood valorisation by its impregnation with starch and using DIC technology 1.1. Introduction to problems and synthesis of the objectivesThe West project, financed by EC under the Craft Programme, aimed to offer new technological solutions for the treatment of the waterlogged wood objects. Thanks to the development of a treatment method called Arkè, we propose an innovative technology for the improvement of the consolidation and the restoration of the waterlogged articles. The partners activities in the project have been devoted to the ancient waterlogged wood, that seems to be of topical interest; in fact this project enjoined general interest by the potential final users (Museums, Monuments and Fine Arts Offices, etc.)The objectives of the project, could be such synthesized: ✔ Developing a consolidation and restoration process that will allow a better museal exposition, favouring the esthetical aspects (colour, texture, density) to the mechanical properties, even guaranteeing to the treated element a suitable mechanical consistence for the exposition;✔ Reducing considerably the time and costs of treatment of the elements compared to time and costs of the best techniques actually on the market (PEG + frees drying); ✔ Verifying the technical feasibility of the process both on small elements (wood objects, crockery, small finds), and on thick and big ones, studying the necessary adaptations for the treatment of different species of wood and of wood with different degree of deterioration; ✔ Guaranteeing the not-harmfulness and reversibility of the treatment thanks to the use of natural materials and developing some conservation treatment of the finds to 1.2.
